RABAT (Reuters Life!) – Just 200 copies of North Africa’s first gay interest magazine have been sold in Morocco since April, but Islamists are already warning of a threat to traditional family values.

Homosexuality is taboo in the Arab world and Moroccan law punishes “lewd or unnatural acts with an individual of the same sex” with jail terms of up to three years and a fine.

The owners of the magazine Mithly (an Arabic word meaning “the same as me” which has come to mean gay) were prepared for a backlash and already had a back-up plan — a Web version which will carry its second edition this week.

The paper edition circulated informally because it lacked a distribution license from the government, said Samir Bargachi, general coordinator of Kif-Kif, Morocco’s only gay rights group and the magazine’s publisher.

But he said Mithly’s appearance is a sign of progress on homosexual rights in the conservative north African country, where most gay men and lesbians tend to keep their sexuality a secret for fear of rejection by family and friends.

“Many in Kif-Kif have had no problems with their families… Others have been thrown out of home, had problems at university or at work,” said Barghachi by phone from Madrid where he lives.

Kif-Kif — a north African expression that translates roughly as “all the same” — is based in Spain, has not been legally recognized in Morocco and cannot campaign openly. Most of Mithly’s writers live in Morocco but keep a low profile.

HOMOSEXUALITY “A THREAT”

“What happens in the private lives (of homosexuals) is their concern,” said Mustapha Khelfi, editor of Attajdid, a newspaper close to the main Islamist opposition party PJD. “Propagation and encouragement of homosexuality represents a threat.”

He said Mithly’s publishers should follow the law governing the legal distribution of newspapers because “without respect for the law, we can’t predict how society will sometimes react”.

Mithly’s themes include controversy over Elton John playing at a music festival in Morocco, a study of suicide among gay Moroccans and a book by an Algerian transsexual named Randa.

The European Union sees Morocco’s defense of individual freedoms as key to talks on deeper trade and investment ties.

“It seems that something is happening in Morocco that does not exist elsewhere in the Arab world,” said Abdellah Taia, a gay Moroccan author who lives in Paris. “A new generation … has achieved a certain freedom of expression thanks to the Internet, and this magazine is a result of that freedom.”

Convictions for homosexual acts are rare in Morocco, but in late 2007 four men were jailed after a video appeared on You Tube showing what some said was a gay wedding.

The men denied this but the house where the celebration took place was attacked by an angry mob, prompting 150 public figures including intellectuals, politicians and artists to issue a manifesto warning of a “climate of hatred and inquisition”.

Some human rights activists say homosexuality has always existed in Moroccan society, and references to it can even be found in traditional “Al Malhoun” songs, some of which tell of love affairs between men.

“Moroccans have always been tolerant toward homosexuals — they were never persecuted,” said rights campaigner Khadija Rouissi. “Why today are we not tolerant toward them? Because some people would like to import a fanatical brand of Islam.”

For Bargachi, public awareness of homosexual rights has improved in Morocco in the last few years even though the conservative press whips up popular prejudices.

“We have organized a conference in Morocco called ‘Reality Against Myths’,” he said. “Lots of people still think homosexuals all carry AIDS or they are pedophiles.”

Israel’s latest gambit is to expel Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza!

According to a report published by Haaretz Newspaper last Sunday, the Israeli occupation forces will consider any Palestinian who has no special permit to be in a certain area within the occupied Palestinian territory an infiltrator and therefore will become a ‘criminal offender’ under Israeli law.

“What the occupying power is doing is punishing Palestinians for existing,” a Fattah spokesman Dr. Shaaath said. “Under this new Apartheid law, a Palestinian from the West Bank found in the Jordan Valley, a Gaza ID holder living in the West Bank, a Jerusalemite married to a Palestinian ID holder or a foreigner married to a Palestinian who lives in the West Bank can all be considered criminal offenders, meaning they can be imprisoned for up to three years or deported.”

Dr. Shaath stated that “this policy must be added to the suffering experienced by thousands of foreign passport holders of Palestinian origin being denied entry into their homeland as well as the hundreds of already divided families by Israeli Apartheid policies”.

Arab-Americans rejoiced Monday over the crowning of raven-haired beauty Rima Fakih, a 24-year-old Lebanese immigrant from Michigan, calling it a victory for diversity in the United States, especially at a time when Arabs suffer from negative stereotypes in this country – and anti-immigrant sentiment is in the news.

Meanwhile, some harsh critics wondered if Trump’s Miss USA organization was trying to send a message, sniping that the victory amounted to “affirmative action,” or implying the first runner-up, Miss Oklahoma USA, suffered unfairly because of an answer she gave supporting Arizona’s new immigration law.

All this comes, of course, a year after 2009 runner-up Carrie Prejean and her views on gay marriage dominated the headlines. Suddenly it seemed like the pageant had become a battleground, albeit in bikinis and flesh-baring gowns, for the hot-button political and social issues of the day.

If all that weren’t enough, photos emerged of Fakih pole-dancing in skimpy shorts and a tank top in a radio show contest in 2007. The show’s producers said they’d been contacted by representatives of the Miss Universe contest requesting more photographs and information. But the show also noted – correctly – that the photos were no more provocative than anything on the Miss USA website.

In any case, Arab-Americans were elated by the victory of Fakih, who was born into a powerful Shiite family in southern Lebanon and whose family said they celebrate both the Muslim and Christian faiths.

“With all the stigma that goes around – especially after 9/11 and how people portray Muslims and Arab-Americans – it’s just a great way to knock down all those barriers,” said Dewnya Bakri-Bazzi, 22, a Muslim law student from Dearborn, Mich., who uptated her Facebook status to read, “woot woot who knows maybe I can be the next Miss America?”

Abed Ayoub, the legal director for the Washington-based Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee, called the win significant. “It shows our country’s diversity and the opportunity it offers all citizens.”

He decried the negative blog postings as “disgusting.”

“Rima had a great event,” he said. “Her religion and race was not an issue during the competition, and I hope not during the judging either. She won on beauty, elegance and eloquence.”

Not that Fakih and her family hadn’t been prepared for negative publicity. Even before the pageant, Ayoub said, when Fakih had won her state pageant, his group had helped prepare the family.

“We told the family they should expect this,” Ayoub said. “We told them that some people spew hatred. But she was strong. She held her ground.”

Pageant officials said their records were not detailed enough to show whether Fakih was the first Arab-American, Muslim or immigrant to win the Miss USA title. The pageant started in 1952 as a local bathing suit competition in Long Beach, Calif.

A winner in the 1980s may have had a Lebanese parent, Ayoub said, but having a winner of Arab descent was exceedingly rare nonetheless. The group’s regional director in Dearborn, Mich., Fakih’s hometown, said the victory was especially sweet given the current political climate.

“We did not choose to be in the hot seat,” Imad Hamad said in a telephone interview. “But the tragedy of Sept. 11 put us in the hot seat and imposed a new reality. Also, we have the background of anti-immigrant sentiment, in Arizona, and efforts by some to pass a similar law in Michigan. So this victory is a reaffirmation that America is America, the land of the brave and the land of opportunity. Rima now she can be a role model for all our young people.”

Some noted that Fakih had stumbled when, in a question about birth control, she called it a “controlled substance.” And she nearly stumbled, quite literally, on her gown because of its long train. But she stayed upright.

As for Morgan Elizabeth Woolard of Oklahoma, she was asked a question – by actor Oscar Nunez of NBC’s “The Office” – about Arizona’s new immigration law. She said she supported the law, which requires police enforcing another law to verify a person’s immigration status if there’s “reasonable suspicion” that the person is in the country illegally.

“I’m a huge believer in states’ rights. I think that’s what’s so wonderful about America,” Woolard said. “So I think it’s perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law.”

Conservative bloggers like Michelle Malkin suggested the question was a trap. The pageant’s judges, who included skater Johnny Weir and NBA star Carmelo Anthony, were unavailable for comment Monday, as was Trump, whose office said he was too busy to speak about the pageant.

Fakih was born in Srifa, a village in southern Lebanon that was heavily bombed during the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war. She moved to the United States with her family in 1993 and attended a Catholic school in New York. Her family moved to Michigan in 2003.

Her sister, Rana, who moved back to Lebanon a few months ago for a new job, said she had spent the night exchanging messages with her father, Hussein, and another sister, Ruba, who were attending the competition.

“It was a beautiful surprise,” she said from Srifa. “It was not easy for Rima to reach this title. We’re very proud as Lebanese Americans and as Lebanese that Rima reached this point despite all the pressures and stereotyping about Arabs and Lebanese. She made it. She fought and reached her goal.”

A gay couple has been jailed and convicted over what the judge deemed inappropriate and unnatural behavior.

According to reports, Malawian citizens Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza, who are openly gay men, were arrested after celebrating their engagement with a party at a hotel where Chimbalanga worked.

In court, the judge deemed the act of homosexuality to be inappropriate and convicted the couple for unnatural acts and gross indecency under laws dating from the colonial era. Blantyre Chief Resident Magistrate Nyakwawa Usiwa said the sentencing will take place on Thursday and they could be imprisoned for up to 14 years.

Edi Phiri, a gay man who fled Malawi for Britain five years ago after being beaten because of his sexuality, said he was shocked by Tuesday’s verdict.

“It’s very, very pathetic,” he said. “I don’t know how I can describe how disappointed I am.”

For the gay men and lesbians that remain, many feel that the verdict will cause them to go into hiding thus making the tracking of AIDS and HIV harder, because gay people forced underground in Africa are unlikely to seek counseling and treatment for AIDS, activists say. In Malawi, nearly 1 million people – an estimated 12 percent of the population – are living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Although facing very harsh criticism from neighboring European countries, the Malawian government, backed by church leaders, says it is clear the two men broke the law.

Religious officials say homosexuality is “sinful” and the West should not be allowed to use its financial power to force Malawi to accept homosexuality. Malawi relies on donors for 40 percent of its development budget.

At the verdict reading, the attorney for the two gentlemen, Priti Patel of the Southern African Litigation Centre, said the couple could appeal on the grounds that the laws under which they were prosecuted violate the country’s 1994 constitution; although an earlier attempt by their lawyer to have the case thrown out on those grounds was rejected.

Homosexuality is illegal in at least 37 countries in Africa including Malawi. In Uganda, lawmakers are considering a bill that could sentence homosexuals to life in prison and includes capital punishment for “repeat offenders.” Even in South Africa, the only African country that recognizes gay rights, gangs have raped lesbians.

The Moroccan state, on the other hand, considers homosexuality as a crime. Gay Moroccans are, hence, caught between the hammer of the judiciary and the anvil of Islamist wrath. It is for this reason that the offices of Mithly and Kif-Kif have been established in Madrid, Spain. Despite these difficulties, Samir Bergachi told Afrik.com that the independent press as well as rights associations have “welcomed” the magazine.

Hard copies of the first issue of the magazine were printed and distributed clandestinely in Rabat. But for now, those in charge of Mithly want to focus their efforts on the Internet version for the sake of convenience. The first issue devotes several pages to British pop singer Elton John, whose participation in the Mawazine Festival, scheduled to take place in Rabat from May 21 to 29, has aroused the ire of the Islamists, due to his homosexuality. The singer is expected to meet Kif-Kif activists before his performance. Samir Bergachi believes that there is an implicit recognition by the authorities of the gay movement in Morocco. “We won a battle,” he exclaims.

Afrik.com: Why did you decide to start a gay magazine?

Samir Bergachi: For over 5 years now, there has been a debate surrounding homosexuality in Morocco. But the mainstream media has the tendency to sensationalize the subject. With Mithly, we have the opportunity to give the views of homosexuals, and the opportunity to interact directly with society.
Afrik.com: The first issue of your magazine was distributed under the counter in Morocco, according to several newspapers.

We printed 200 copies and distributed them among people we already knew. But we only did this to leave a mark in the history of gay activism in Morocco — we want to focus on the Internet version. It took place under difficult conditions, given the strict nature of laws that criminalize homosexuality (6 months to 3 years imprisonment and a fine). But fortunately, we did not encounter any problems. We plan to do the same thing with the next issue. We will distribute 200 copies to a target audience. This idea, however, has no future.

Afrik.com: Have you taken the necessary steps to obtain official permission to publish?

Samir Bergachi: We have not formally requested permission to publish. However, we have had indirect contact with the authorities, which have still not produced any results. We have therefore concluded that there will be no permission. We are officially not recognized in Morocco. And although we work with many associations the state refuses to recognize our existence.

Afrik.com: You got involved in gay activism well before Mithly. In fact, you are a founding member of Kif-Kif…

Samir Bergachi: The idea of Kif-Kif was born after an incident in Titouane in 2004, during which the police arrested 42 homosexuals at a birthday party. The case triggered an uproar in the local media. Associations that usually intervened on human rights issues were silent. Students were expelled from universities, young people were thrown out of their homes. We told ourselves, with friends from other associations, that we would make sure this never happened again. We met in Tangier two months after the incident, and implemented a plan to reintegrate the affected youth into society.

Afrik.com: What is Kif-kif all about?

Samir Bergachi: More than 90% of our activities are based in Morocco. These activities include, Cultural, educational, sexual education classes. We also work with psychologists and doctors. Sometimes, homosexuals are not welcome by medical practitioners. In cases like these, we guide them toward doctors who work with us. Our work also consists of exposing gay culture in the Grand Maghreb, where it is nonexistent. It should be noted that we have started from scratch.

Afrik.com: Your magazine has aroused indignation among some Moroccan newspapers and certain politicians. Is there a media campaign against Mithly?

Samir Bergachi: Actually, there were two campaigns. On the one hand, many felt that our initiative was natural, and had no problem with it. Generally, associations and the independent media welcomed Mithly. Among them are, the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, the weekly Nichan, Tel Quel … And there are, of course, other more conservative media with religious prejudices, opposed to homosexuality, and who do not see the arrival of this magazine in a positive light. This campaign has gone uninterrupted since 2005 and we’re used to it. It has become banal (laughs). I am also quite unhappy with the way some Western media covered the release of the magazine. Reading them gives the impression that people still ride donkeys in Morocco! Some have often asked shocking questions like: “Are you threatened with death? Are they trying to kill you?” It is true that there are many people who dislike me, but not this level of violence.

Afrik.com: Morocco is a predominantly Muslim country. And many Muslims believe their religion is inconsistent with being gay. Do you think homosexuality is compatible with Islam?”

Samir Bergachi: We have no answer to such questions. We are modernist and secular. It must be noted that it is not only Muslims who stigmatize homosexuality. Only 30 years ago in Spain, (under Franco’s National-Catholic regime, ed), they were sentenced to death. In my opinion, there is no contradiction between Islam and homosexuality. We have in our association a number of lesbians who wear the veil and live their lives normally, without the feeling that they are in contradiction with religion. I can’t really give an answer to this question. I am not a religious man.

Afrik.com: What topics will the next issue of Mithly tackle?

Samir Bergachi: We will devote our front-page topic to the suicide phenomenon among homosexuals. We conducted a survey on the subject and found that the suicide rate among gay men is 20% higher. This is really worrying. The state must intervene. We also intend to talk about an Algerian transsexual named Randa, who has just released a book. Not forgetting the Mawazine festival in Morocco where Elton John, the singer, will be present.

Afrik.com: The participation of British pop singer Elton John, who is openly gay, has irked conservatives recently. One of the leaders of the ruling Justice and Development Party (PJD), Abdellah Baha, said that his coming was a sort of “incentive” to homosexuality in Morocco.

Samir Bergachi: Elton John will attend the festival, and we will be meeting him before his stage appearance. The Moroccan authorities, who are too concerned about their image abroad, cannot prevent it. And it is a form of recognition for the gay movement in Morocco. We have won a battle (laughs). Elton John might also speak on the subject before singing. There will be surprises!

Rabat, 11 May (AKI) – Morocco’s embattled gay community have vowed to make sure Elton John’s landmark concert goes ahead later this month in Rabat. They say they are determined to meet the world-famous pop star there despite opposition to the concert from Islamists in the Muslim country.

‘Neither Morocco’s authorities nor its Islamists can stop us holding a meeting with Elton John,’ the head of the country’s gay association ‘Kif Kif’, Samir Barkashi, told the Hespress website.

Barkashi’s comments came after organisers of Rabat’s prestigious annual Mawazine festival confirmed that Elton John would give a concert there despite strenuous opposition from Moroccan Islamists.

‘The Moroccan authorities will allow us speak to him because they are afraid that if they do not, this will damage their image abroad,’ Barkashi said.

The festival, at which top Arab and western singers appear, is taking place this year from 21-29 May.

‘Elton John coming to Rabat represents an important victory for Moroccan gays, who are fighting a tough battle for rights,’ Barkashi said.

The star may meet members of Morocco’s gay community at a hotel in the capital or at the airport when he arrives.

Securing freedoms and rights for gays and lesbians in Turkey will help the country show how compatible it is with European values, a Dutch member of the European Parliament says. Turkey needs to improve its treatment of gays and lesbians in the country in order to show movement toward “more European values and standards,” a Dutch member of the European Parliament said Monday.

Fundamental freedoms – whether to practice one’s religion or express one’s sexual identity – are the core of European Union values, according to Marietje Schaake, the human-rights coordinator for the Liberals, the third-largest group in the European Parliament.

“These freedoms should be understood by people as something that everybody has, and everybody has a different identity that they should be able to express within the limits of the law,” Schaake told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review in an interview. “For women and for LGBT lesbian people, guarantees under the law to be able to live safely and freely are very necessary.”

Turkey does not have a good record on dealing with gay and lesbian organizations, many of which fear being shut down. The government is planning to amend relevant legislation to prevent discrimination as part of the country’s EU accession process, a change many observers say would show how compatible Turkey is with European values.

Equal treatment and equal rights for LGBT people is an important agenda item for the Liberal Group and Schaake’s political party, which is called D66, the Dutch deputy said. She said her group is active around the world in making sure the rights of gays and lesbians are safeguarded.

Schaake also criticized recent remarks by Selma Aliye Kavaf, the Turkish state minister for women and family affairs, saying they raise serious concerns about Turkey’s progress on the issue.

Kavaf prompted protests in Turkey and abroad when she said in a March interview that she believes “homosexuality is a biological disorder, a disease” that “needs to be treated.”

Such statements by Turkish government officials are not helpful and not in compliance with European standards, the Dutch deputy said.

“I think to make a transition toward more European values and standards the political leadership in Turkey should not make these statements because they are actually fostering discrimination,” Schaake told the Daily News. “They could actually inspire people to treat LGBT people differently because it seems as if the leadership approves of seeing these people as different and as outsiders.”

She said such controversial remarks might stem from a lack of knowledge.

“Maybe information can help Turkey’s leadership because there are also diverse voices in the political sphere,” Schaake said. “Hopefully by bringing people together, by explaining it is not a disease, we can make this a more human discussion.”

Asked if she had any plan to meet Kavaf, the Dutch deputy said: “Not specifically, but I’d be happy to meet with her.”

Challenges lie before freedoms in Turkey

A Dutch member of the European Parliament has expressed doubts over polarization in Turkey between Islamists and Kemalists, but said she did not believe in such a division.

“What we see now in Turkey is that it is becoming very polarized; there is really a tendency to label people as belonging to one side or another: Kemalists vs. Islamists. We hear all these group terms and I don’t believe in this division in Turkey,” said Marietje Schaake, the human-rights coordinator for the Liberal group in the European Parliament.

“I believe in a great diversity in Turkey and I think we should have an open debate that does not brand people immediately but that invites people to talk about what they want Turkey to look like and what their opinion is,” she said.

On the topic of media freedom, Schaake said she heard many journalists saying they don’t really feel free to express themselves completely and have fears of being branded as being in one camp or the other.

“I think this is very dangerous. These are not issues that can be dealt with in the law but that should be dealt with between people,” she said. “The law should allow for the greatest freedom of expression…

He most recently served as High Commissioner Designate of Pakistan to Canada, and prior to that he was the ambassador of Pakistan to South Africa,. He also served in that capacity in Washington from 1983-87, and New Delhi from 1994-2000.

He earlier worked at the Pakistan headquarters as section officer from 1982- 83, director from 1987-94 and director-general from 2000-2003.

Miangul Akbar Zeb, also whose name news agencies sometimes refer to as Zib, was born on 15 February, 1954. He holds a Masters degree.

maNga was founded in 2001. Having played mostly smaller venues over a while, they came into the spotlight after finishing second in a music contest. Their eponymous debut album was relased in 2004 and became a major success achieving gold status for sales exceeding 100,000 copies. Their song Dursun zaman, a duet with singer Göksel, was included on the soundtrack of the 2006 film Sınav and the re-release of their first album. maNga’s second studio album Şehr-i hüzün was released in 2009 and it spawned the three hit singles Dünyanın sonuna doğmuşum (no. 1 in Turkey), Beni benimle bırak and Cevapsız sorular.

maNga currently consists of Ferman Akgül (vocals), Özgür Can Öney (drums), Efe Yılmaz (turntable), Cem Bahtiyar (bass guitar) and Yağmur Sarıgül (guitar). They were invited to represent Turkey in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 and their song We could be the same was officially presented during a special press conference.

Turkey entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 1975 and finished last on its debut. Also, over the following years the country was not very succesful and it was not before 1986 that the first top ten placing was achieved. However, it turned in 1997 when Turkey finished third. A victory in 2003 followed as well as fourth places in 2004, 2007 and 2009.

We seem to be going through a bit of a Brent Corrigan phase again at the moment. Brent, Jesse Jorden and Richie Rau round out the threeway in this introductory encounter and after a bit of horseplay, the guys start to get serious with their interaction.
