But overall, the resources are highly limited.

With this in mind, the new book Gay Travels in the Muslim World, edited by longtime gay travel journalist Michael T. Luongo, has been a tremendous boon to GLBT travelers and others curious about gay culture in the world where it’s generally thought to be forbidden, hidden, or repressed, Muslim culture. Harrington Park Press, a division of Haworth Press, published this rich collection of 18 essays in 2007. Luongo, who is Senior Editor of Haworth’s “Out in the World” Gay Travel Literature series, has traveled to every continent and more than 75 countries, and has contributed to a wide range of publications, including Out Traveler, Passport, Advocate, Conde Nast Traveler, The New York Times, and National Geographic Traveler. Rather recently, he spent time uncovering the gay underworld (as best he could) in Iraq, and he contributed one of the book’s most lucid and vivid essays, “Adventures in Afghanistan,” based on his explorations of Kabul.

Luongo’s essay, like most of those in this collection, offer plenty of surprises to those of us with preconceived ideas about life in those parts of the world that we perceive as off-limits to gay travelers. He notes the “at times, anything-goes, Casablanca-esqure atmosphere” of Kabul, and points out that most Afghanees he talked to about gay issues suggested he venture to that nation’s “gay capital”, Kandahar.

The books essays offer glimpse into a many nations, some more familiar to Westerners than others. Jay Davidson writes of his experiences in the Peace Corps in Mauritania, a U.S. Marine vet of the Iraq War who grew up in rural Alabama describes his interaction with a gay Iraqi man, travel agent Thomas Bradbury chronicles his bumpy but sweet decade-long romance with a man in Antalya, Turkey. Other stories touch on gay travels in Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Arab villages in Israel’s Galilee, Oman, and Bangladesh. There are tales that deal with sexual and romantic relationships (albeit in a subdued manner – this is not a collection of erotica), cultural outlooks, political and religious views – but in the end, in most cases, these candid, curious, and often poignant stories bridge these related topics. For when it comes to gay culture in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, or even comparatively open Morocco and Turkey, it’s rather impossible to discuss same-sex relations with delving into politics and religion.

Luongo has culled together a diverse mix of stories, and Gay Travels in the Muslim World is relatively short (200 pages) and feels frustrating only in the sense that after reading these 18 essays, it’s easy to crave for more insights and information about gay Muslim life. In this sense, Luongo has no doubt accomplished at least one important aim of his, to pique our curiosity about traveling to these richly historic nations. And, of course, in tackling a taboo subject with such candor, Luongo and his contributors risk upsetting the Muslim establishment while also offering hope to the untold thousands of closeted and supressed gay residents of the Muslim world. It’s easy to imagine a time in the not-too-distant future when gay travel essays about the Middle East become relatively commmonplace. Until then, we can thank Michael Luongo and Haworth Press for this engaging, courageous collection.

Morocco is an ancient civilization steeped in history and hormones, a gold mine for the archeologist and psychologist. If you go looking for a western-style gay scene in Morocco you won`t find it as in law homosexuality is illegal and you risk arrest, deportation or imprisonment if found guilty of “lewd or unnatural acts with an individual of the same sex.” Neverthless you can’t legislate against human nature, and if you`re not looking, man-man sex situations will most likely simply unfold. ALI AND THE HOTEL
Still, most gay Moroccans never have an ongoing gay relationship. Mostly, they are married with kids and find only an occasional assignation for their secret needs. There are exceptions to this, of course, as we found out, since one such man was standing nearby–our hotel owner, Ali, a quietly charming man of about 50. His current ownership of the hotel was the result of a relationship with his late partner who passed away a couple of years ago. They had been lovers for thirty years even though Ali was married for twenty of those thirty years and the father of two children.

Ali was a self-acknowledged gay man who took his roles as husband/father/lover seriously even though he and his partner never lived full time under the same roof. Originally from Scotland, the partner bought the hotel many years ago and when he met Ali they became business partners. This conveniently masked the more intimate aspects of their affairs. It was a love story in which Lawrance felt privileged to have been closely involved as a friend and confidante.

Ali told us that he cared very much for his family, but when my friend Lawrance asked if he loved his wife, Ali looked away for a second before he replied: ” I love her as I am suppose to. INTO THE DESERT
But Morocco is not all about hormones and ambiguous romance. There is much history and beauty to this northwest corner of Africa. A week later we arrived at the Auberge Merzouga in the Sahara Desert. There are rooms as well as tents for rent. We opted for one of the black wool Berber tents only fifty yards from dunes. From a short distance, the hostel looked like a medieval fort with small turrets and foot-thick walls of white plaster. At sunset, the sand hills turned from soft taupe through a color chart of amber, sienna and gold accompanied by long deep shadows. As the last rays of direct light lingered on the land, a row of camel riders came walking across one of the dunes as if on cue to fill my camera lens. The night passed under a billion crystal stars spread out across the sky like scattered fairy dust. There are not more stars here, just less human produce to murk up the sky. We were the only guests that night. Absolute silence and darkness prevailed on the edge of the great timeless desert. In places like this, it`s best to go out, look up at infinity, say nothing and think less for a while.
At 5 AM, from the earthen village of Merzouga half a mile away the muezzin called out in the blackness his chant “Allaho-akbar…” to those who might come to the mosque and pray for the first of five times daily. The chant was too sweet to call an interruption. Mostly, only the roosters responded to the muezzin`s cry at that hour.

Then the most startling of all the wonders in this place. In the crystalline blackness a gigantic bright glowing orb appeared with a million-mile vapor trail. It didn`t seem to move and the enormous tail did not diminish. I thought perhaps it was a dying star in its last gasp of supernova burn. There was no possible means of finding out what it was; no TV, no radio, certainly nothing published in English, not even other tourists to ask. It was not until days later that I found out this stunning astronomical prize was the “heavenly show of the decade”: the Hale-Bapp comet.

In the morning, the urge to climb the dunes was too seductive and we submitted. The powdery surface was difficult to walk on so I settled for a lesser mound that presented me with an impressive photogenic view of the rising light and falling shadows.

I sat for a while on this warm soft mustard hill running my hands in the sand and lifting up a handful to watch the fine grains running through my fingers. I imagined this is what infinity must feel like as I watch the earth slip away from my grasp back into the countless other grains surrounding me. Footprints left today are gone in an hour. The desert is a good place to contemplate immortality and the passing of time. Thoughts or beliefs make not one grain of difference among the sand mountains that have drifted here for a million years. It`s not sad or joyous, just quiet and endless.

For two wondrous weeks, we had found in Morocco a land of history, sublime night skies, moderate Muslim life and a few hormones.

The view of the Straits of Gibraltar and Bay of Tangiers was said to have inspired writers such as Jean Genet and Tennessee Williams, once regulars at the Hafa cafe. Rachid Taferssiti, a Tangiers writer, referred to Lévy’s wall of of breeze blocks as an example of the “ransacking of the countryside”.

Sensitive to local concerns, Lévy is said to have put up his wall to shelter the shapely Dombasle from public gaze as she suns herself by the swimming pool of the villa. The spectacle of women sunbathing topless plays into the hands of a growing Islamist movement striving to turn Morocco, one of the more liberal countries in the Muslim world, into a strict theocracy.

At first it was only super-rich foreigners who came to live in Morocco, among them Yves Saint Laurent, the French couturier, and the late magazine magnate Malcolm Forbes, who flew in 800 friends from all over the world, including Elizabeth Taylor, for his 70th birthday party at his palace in Tangiers in 1989.

Since then, having tired of the south of France, the Who’s Who? of French society has taken up residence in Morocco, from sportsmen and politicians to captains of industry. Morocco has also been attracting more ordinary tourists, becoming a haven for westerners in search of exotic thrills just a few hours by air from London or Paris.

The bombings in Casablanca in 2003, in which 45 people were killed, do not appear to have harmed that traffic. Yet the rise of the Party for Justice and Development, as the Islamist organisation is known, could cast a shadow on the horizon if, as some predict, it becomes the dominant force in parliament after elections next May.

After it first gained seats in parliament, the party was associated with a campaign against the Miss Morocco contest, which it regarded as “pornographic”. All of those involved were denounced as “un-Islamic” and the competition had to be held in secret.

The group favours sharia, which would enforce a widely ignored prohibition on the sale of alcohol and oblige all women to wear the veil. It has won a big following among a Muslim population depressed by the spectacle of young men and women — and sometimes even children — prostituting themselves to foreign “sex tourists”.

An Islamist newspaper warned recently that the tsunami that devastated parts of Thailand and Indonesia was God’s punishment for immoral behaviour and that Morocco risked a similar disaster unless it mended its ways. Partly in response to such pressure the government of Mohamed VI, the modernising monarch, recently launched a crackdown on vice.

Dozens of women have been rounded up in raids on bars in Marrakesh and other Moroccan cities this month on suspicion of prostitution. Several bar owners have been thrown into jail.

At the same time, the authorities decided to make an example of Jack-Henri Soumère, a well-known French opera director who has been visiting Morocco for three decades.

He was given a four-month suspended prison sentence and fined £500 for homosexuality — which is illegal in Morocco — and possession of cannabis.

Aniko Boehler, the co-ordinator of Hands Off My Child, the organisation that brought the case against him, said many foreign visitors to Morocco seemed to think they were in Marbella. Their “neo-colonial attitudes”, she added, were disrespectful to local customs.

Yet it was not just the immoral behaviour of foreigners that was fuelling the indignation of conservatives and the ranks of Islamist supporters.

“The children of the Moroccan elite are just as bad,” she said. “For them, Marrakesh is just as much of a playground. They go there to use and abuse.”

I'm sorry, but is the country going insane? At least this article points out the roots of the Islamicist backlash - idiotic, careless, spoiled Westerners with no regard for how their actions will affect society. I mean, seriously, why would you go to a Muslim country and sunbathe topless?

Morocco does have a serious problem with the sex trade. And Westerners who shamelessly take advantage of it should not be surprised of such a backlash. Islamicism may be be destructive, restrictive, and - dare I say it - unmodern, but sometimes people in the Arab World see no other way to protect themselves from Western decadence. The Western media likes to say that the Orient is afraid of McDonald's and Hollywood, but it's more than that. It's the disrespect that comparitively rich - and therefore powerful - visitors to Islamic countries show the residents' culture there that poses the greatest hazard.

The far majority of the tourists in Beirut are benign - they check out the clubs, the restaurants, and the museums. They buy hookahs and rugs and go home. But there is the tiny percent that tries to buy and sell the local population that causes an extreme amount of damage. You can see the same, to a greater extent, in Morocco, and to an infamous extent, in Thailand.

When there is a backlash, it hurts much more than just the Westerners who tour Islamic countries. It hurts all aspects of liberalism - gay rights, womens' rights, economic freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc. Westerners who cause the problems can then just stay home or go somewhere else, leavng the residents to deal with the consequences.
