“The most marked thing that I noted was the admission of rape by a number of the young boys,” she said.

Redeemed slave Deng Ayuel told Sliwa through a Denka translator, “I watched the Arabs rape my two sisters, and I watched many slave boys being raped as well. They would often take a girl or boy and do whatever they wanted with them sexually. I, too, was raped many times by my master and his Arab friends.”

There have been previous reports of female slaves being gang raped in Sudan, but Sliwa discovered that many male captives were also being gang raped. She felt it was important to let others know in the hope that slavery in Sudan might eventually end.

“The more this information gets out, the better,” she said.

“This type of sex is very strange to us,” Deng Deng, another freed slave, testified. “Many times during rape, boys would cry so loudly that the Arabs would stuff rags in their mouths so they could not be heard. I witnessed this often. If you refuse sex, sometimes they would shoot you.” Deng Deng said he was beaten many times because he was a Christian and wouldn’t convert to Islam.

The boys described their masters taking them to a “special place” right before a rape would occur, says Sliwa. As they were being taken to this place, the boys would try to escape but would be hunted down like animals, she explains.

The rebels of southern Sudan, a mostly Christian and animist region, are fighting for autonomy from the radical National Islamic Front regime, which aims to impose Islamic law on the entire country. Since 1983, about 2 million people have died from the fighting and war-related famine.

Sliwa described how the National Islamic Front takes slaves, saying, “Sometimes government soldiers attack a town. They want to make it into their town. They want to take it away from the civilians. … Then they take the women and children, and they kill a lot of the elderly.”

Those taken are then tied up and forced to walk to “slave centers,” says Sliwa, where they are auctioned off or traded to Arab masters. Both the Arabs that capture the civilians and the Arab masters are “quite brutal” to them, she says.

“Not in every single case, but in most cases, they’re being victimized and raped by both the captors and the masters and the masters’ Arab friends,” Sliwa told WND.

Accompanying Christian Solidarity International, to various redemptions in southern Sudan, Sliwa learned how black Denka slaves are freed. Certain Arabs called “retrievers” work with the Denka and CSI to free some of those who have been taken captive. Sliwa says a while back the Denka told the Arab retrievers that to have use of the Denka land to water their cattle, they would have to help free some of the Denka slaves. These retrievers make their money through raising cattle, thus they agreed to help the Denka, she says.

“The retrievers are actually horrified, because they go into these Muslim towns and they see how these women and children are treated,” said Sliwa.

“It’s very rare for a Muslim to speak out against another Muslim … but these guys were speaking out against them.”

From her interviews with Arab retrievers, Sliwa learned that sometimes the slaves have to be bought from their masters, and other times the slaves are so old and disabled that the masters simply give them away. If an Arab is having sex with a female slave, the wife may find out and take the slave to the retrievers herself, she adds.

“The way the wife usually finds out is the slave has an Arab baby,” explained Sliwa.

The National Islamic Front has been threatening the Arab retrievers because the government doesn’t want them to have anything to do with the Denka, Sliwa says.

“They don’t want the Arabs and Denkas being friends,” she told WND.

“Many of the freed male slaves come to the chiefs and tell us they were repeatedly raped by their Arab captors,” Nhial Chan Nhial, paramount chief of Akon, said to Sliwa. “This affects their minds badly. They are subject to fits of crying, mental problems and are often unable to marry later on in life.”

Sliwa is convinced that the International Criminal Tribunal needs to convict the Sudan government for their crimes against the black Africans of southern Sudan and that the U.S. government should investigate the rape and murder offenses being committed. The media outlets also have a responsibility to get the news of these crimes out to the rest of the world, she says.

While noting that there are human-rights groups and different church organizations working to help the people of Sudan, Sliwa said, “I think we can all do more.”

Nicholas Kulish reports, in an NYT article entitled “Gay Muslims Pack a Dance Floor of Their Own,” on a monthly event known as “Gayhane” at a Berlin disco. But why give the article the title, “Gay Muslims”? No doubt many of those who participate consider themselves Turks or or Kurds Arabs or Turkish-Germans or Berliners?

The monthly club is organized by the transgendered Fatma Souad (pictured), who started throwing the events in 1997. What’s the music? Amr Diab and Cheb Mami are popular. The article leaves the unfortunate impression, however, that the young men and women who participate in Gayhane (“hane” means home in Turkish) would be “killed” if their families knew, but it also shows that homophobia isn’t just a phenomenon peculiar to Middle Eastern communities in Germany. “Homophobia is also higher among Russian immigrants and in other, less urban parts of Germany,” according to social psychologist Bernd Simon.

Coming to married adult Arab who is, by his religion, allowed to have four wives (of course majority of them cannot afford to maintain more than one wife), the main difference in this population and the Western society is the increased frequency of sexual intercourse. Although many of the Arab men would exaggerate and you must discount some of their statements, the fact is that they do make many more frequent visits to their wives.

These Arabs have no other entertainment available in their country. Sports are hardly heard of in an average Arab family. Also at all the social get togethers, men always boast of their sexual athletic achievements! To this is added plenty of spare time and “less” tension in the population than in Western, fast moving society.

One more factor is the climate. Because of hot weather, their day starts early and finishes by lunch time so that afternoon “nap” is available to majority of them and then why not to take advantage of bedding with their wives at that time!

I am convinced that an average Arab does the sexual exercise much more often than an Indian or a Westerner. An Arab phallus is more often bigger in size, and is maintained very Clean. Part of the looks are because of “clean” circumcision done on them and absence of smegma. Part of the “big” look is due to the absence of pubic hair. The pubis is shaved every few days. Also their semen production is much faster. Many of them would remember their young days when they did, what I have termed as “status coitus”, when during a single intercourse they have ejaculated three to four times without withdrawing the phallus, which got erected soon after every ejaculation!! After discussing in detail the sexual habits of most of my Arab patients, I find, following is the average frequency of the sexual intercourse in this population :

Between the ages of 20 to 40, many Arabs would have (either attempt or wish to have!) a session three to four times a day. Although many of them would have a session in the afternoon or early morning before bath, most of them do have more than one session at night before going to sleep. After that age and around fifty, many would have twice a day. After the age of sixty, most of them continue to have one session per day even till the age of 70 to 80 or more. This habit is not universal though I have had patients who tell me that sexual intercourse has become such a routine that they feel funny, weak or abnormal if they abstain for more than two to three days!

And yet I do see so many “Westernised” Arabs who, in the middle age visit their wives only once or twice a week! But they would be mocked at by their friends (or young wives) if they heard of this “standard” sexual performance!

The sexual problems of Yemenis are complex. Many of them are away from their wives for months together serving in the surrounding countries. Also, though some types of ‘Qat’ are sex stimulating, majority of the times ‘Qat’ depresses the sexual desire and the performance.

The wives of Arab men are covered by veils (“Burkka”) and are often very shy. Because of this discordance and the “joint family” system, with a number of married couples in the same family, many Arabs would like to satisfy their instinct without any “fore play”. This in fact is the most common cause of ‘premature ejacuIation’, which is the main type of sexual weakness complained of by many of them. More so, fore play would be required much more when an elderly male is trying to enter the tight introitus of a young wife!!

I have hardly ever heard any one complain of lack of sexual desire, except a few Yemeni psychoneurotic patients.

The only other sex problem is the erectile impotency. So far, I have not found any organic cause for this symptom, (except a solitary case of shy Dragger Syndrome). As mentioned elsewhere Tabes Dorsalis (Syphilis of C.N.S.) is not seen in this population. Diabetes Mellitus does not seem to affect sex so much as it does in other populations, though, off and on, I do see marked impotency in diabetics. (Vice-versa, I have seen so many diabetic Arabs, who continue to have a normal sex life as described above) .

Most of these patients would agree to and say that they get nocturnal or early morning erections (at the wrong time! according to them) and have functional impotency. There are a lot of factors responsible for”keeping up” this erectile impotency.

1. A single experience of premature ejaculation (“Soraye”) brings about a suspicion in their minds of sex weakness and this leads to erectile impotence
2. They then start communicating with their friends, and hear of their sexual habits, which further increases their inferiority complex and causes more impotence.
3. They then start noticing the quality, quantity and the thickness of semen and get “ideas” that the semen may be defective. More often the specialists would ask for the semen examination as an investigation of erectile impotence (new fashion or is it to satisfy the Arab visitor)! Very often if the report shows slightly low sperm count, it causes more anxiety and leads to more impotence. If one notices the column of “abstinence period” in semen examination reports, it is always blank (may be because of language difficulties). And that is, in fact, many a times, the cause of oligospermia reported in semen examination.

The serum prolactin levels and testosterone levels done on hundreds of my patients were invariably normal.

Most of these patients develop low backache in the morning if their sexual performance has been poor on the previous night. Many of them develop constant psychogenic backache due to sex weakness.

Others develop symptoms of neurosis.

“However, people here are more open to accepting a transgender belly dancer than in the Middle East.”

Ali, who started the Arab Initiative, takes some time off from serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to members and their friends to speak about the purpose of the organization.

“Our aim is to create new bridges between European and Arab cultures, spread information about the Arab world in Sweden, support LGBT people with an Arabic background, and hopefully to bring more tolerance and understanding of their issues and defend their rights in Sweden and abroad,” he says.

“We as Arabs are discriminated against in general as an immigrant group, and then we are discriminated against again amongst our own minority for being gay,” he adds.

Ali and his peers have received funding from the European Union, which supports several LGBT organizations for immigrant minorities around Europe.

Since its establishment last May, the Arab Initiative has held parties, partaken in two Pride festivals, arranged three film showings, and four seminars.

“We have been making connections with LGBT groups in the Middle East, promoting ourselves locally through word of mouth, and standing up for LGBT rights against media producers who portray this particular group in a negative way.”

Ali adds that it is not a political organization, but mostly a place for Arab LGBT people to find support and meet their peers.

Karin Båge, head of RFSL in Stockholm, says that her group was contacted by the Arab Initiative. RFSL quickly gave the group full access to its premises, skills, and contacts.

The difficulties faced by gays in Iraq was brought into sharp relief this week as Human Rights Watched published details of a murderous militia-led campaign against homosexuals in the Middle Eastern country. In response, RFSL called on the Swedish government to halt all deportations to Iraq of people who have sought asylum on the basis of sexual orientation or gender.

“We urge Sweden to investigate the possibility of evacuating homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender people who are at risk of being subjected to ’sexual cleansing’,” RFSL chairperson Sören Juvas wrote in a press release on Monday.

Sa’ad Ibrahim, 37, is an Iraqi citizen who was granted asylum last May after being threatened with death due to his sexual orientation.

“One day in 2006, I received a call between 8 and 9 in the evening when I had arrived home from work. A friend of mine told me that another friend of ours had disappeared. So we asked around and after ten days we found out that his dismembered body had been found. Three of my friends were killed this way. I am the only one alive in my previous circle of friends,” Sa’ad tells The Local.

He had previously received written threats in his ladies’ shoe shop in a conservative Shiite district of Baghdad, where he was told he was a “fag” and that “God hates fags.”

“Around 9.30 to 10 at night there were six people asking about me around the corner. I got the message to leave before they made it to my shop: I escaped through the back door and left everything behind me. I went far away to my uncle’s place where I stayed for the next five months. Every day I would imagine myself torn to pieces.”

He made his way to Sweden through a smuggling network, using up all the money he had managed to gather. When he came to Sweden he was devastated and lonely, he says.

“Now I am very happy because here I am able to mingle and mix with all sorts of people. I met an Iranian man who became my boyfriend. I fell in love with him, as he took me to the Pride festival, which turned my life around 180 degrees. I was totally amazed by the energy of the festival.”
